The best part about Home Birth

Two months of waiting for on-call for a baby to come into the world and the day finally came. All of the planning in the world could not have prepared me to get the call at 3:00 AM on 11/15/2017. I immediately hopped out of the bed, put on the outfit I put out earlier the previous evening and bolted out of the house with my bag. It took me 15 minutes to get there and I ran into the house. It had already started. Moans and groans filled the house and every hallway. I immediately set up both tripods and kept the other cameras in hand. I was set to go.

The doula was already there. Both hands in Reiki position placed on the lower back of the mother-to-be with a set of wooden mala beads wrapped around the right wrist. She too moaned in union with the mother-to-be. Daddy was filling up the tub with hot water. Soon after, the midwife came. She too sat down her belongings like the rest of us in an available space and began preparation for the baby. As mommy got into the tub, the midwife’s assistant came just in time for the pushing to start. Daddy came behind to hold mommy and before you know it, the baby was in her arms. Daddy held the baby in his arms with a smile filled with so much joy and disbelief. Smiles, laughs, and happiness filled the room.  Everyone was so overcome with joy that you could feel it so deeply. It was easy to see what everyone else was experiencing by the look in their eyes. The father’s sister and brother came into the room with melted hearts. It was truly a sight to see.

I have learned several things on this soul impressing journey. Some old lessons, some new;

  • Community is valuable. That birth wouldn’t have been the same without everyone involved and what they brought to the table to make it so beautiful.
  • Life is unpredictable and no amount of planning can prepare you for everything, even the things we see coming.
  • Be conscious of where you are at as a whole at any given moment. It wasn’t until I left that I realized that I was completely and wholly caught up in the moment to moment experience of the unpredictable adventure of birth. Nothing else mattered.
  • Energy is contagious. Always be aware of your surroundings and what put out, and take in. Everyone was full of pure blissful joy, and as a result, we shared that with each other.
 The best part about home birth is the connection, support, joy, love and group effort from everyone involved. Not to mention, LIFE.

7 hours, 6 dead batteries, 1500 pictures, and 3 hours of video later, I am happy to say that this was my first home birth. And it will not be my last. Every moment spent with this amazing family and team has touched my heart for years to come and truly left a mark on my heart.
